Kandahar Polo

$250.00

Perhaps the most traditional piece of sport equipment ever created, the Polo Shirt has been a staple of the Gentlemen Skier's wardrobe since the late 1800's where its presence migrated to the mountains from Britain's posh green grass tennis courts and private polo grounds.  Further guiding this garment transition was a passionate skier and alpinist named Sir Alfred Lunn, who as a child & young man came to love the Swiss Alps and more specifically the town of Murren.  It was there 1924 that Lunn founded the stories Kandahar Ski Club.  A body of passionate alpine sport enthusiasts determined to transform and formalize a new down hill format called the "Slalom," Lunn and his compatriots joined in both common purpose and heartfelt camaraderie to share in the joyful experience of skiing inclusive of its after sport gatherings and social morays.  British in its sensibilities and wardrobes on and off-piste the Kandahar Ski Club was as much a bastion of sport as it was of fashion.  Well-heeled in dress, the Kandahar members basked in the glow of Murren's tallest peak, the Schilthorn, in all seasons and during the summer months adhered to lightweight ensembles including classic collard fare but with shortened sleeves more suitable to the warm climes of June, July, August, and early September.  A new luxury sportswear essential, the Kandahar Polo offers a contemporary expression of an authentic sportswear stable.  Woven of a merino yarn and including a classic 3 button placket and left breast pocket, this handsome warm weather garment is Made in Italy & designed for the Gentlemen Sportsman seeking high taste menswear made in Italy.

THE STORY

First held in January 1928, the inaugural Inferno Race took place when 19 members of Kandahar Ski Club climbed the Schilthorn (2,970m) above Mürren, Switzerland to race down the 2,100 meters to Lauterbrunnen, 14 kilometres away. A journey of almost 10 miles (15 km) and nearly 5 times the length of contemporary downhill Olympic courses, the Inferno was an alpine event whose novelty and legitimate physical and mental obstacles created powerful appeal to the growing racing class cut from the cloth of the Kandahar’s expansive blanket of accelerating British influence.
